Brewery Flats Fishing Access

Brewery Flats Fishing Access is located approximately 1 mile south of Lewistown on Upper Spring Creek Road, just upstream from town. The site provides access to Big Spring Creek, a popular trout stream known for its clear, cool water and quality fishing.

The area has an interesting history. In the early 1900s, Big Spring Creek was straightened at the present-day Brewery Flats site to make room for a railroad yard and other industries. The area takes its name from a brewery that once operated on the site now occupied by the Honey Farm.

In 1998, a major stream restoration project returned Big Spring Creek to a more natural, meandering channel. The restored stream now follows a course approximately 50 percent longer than the original channel, creating a variety of pools, riffles, and natural habitat.

Today, the deeper, slower-moving pools formed around the creek's bends provide excellent habitat for rainbow and brown trout, making the area popular with anglers. The healthy stream also supports a variety of aquatic insects and other small fish that provide an important food source for trout.

The creek and surrounding vegetation provide habitat for a variety of wildlife. Visitors may see waterfowl, songbirds, deer, beaver, and other small mammals along the stream corridor. The restored vegetation and natural stream channel have helped create a more diverse habitat, making Brewery Flats a pleasant destination for both fishing and wildlife viewing.
