Hruska Fishing Access

Hruska Fishing Access is located approximately 6 miles northwest of Lewistown, just off Hanover Road (Highway 426) on Scott Crossing Road. The 52-acre site provides public access to Big Spring Creek, one of Montana's well-known spring-fed trout streams. The creek is known for its cold, clear, high-quality water and provides important habitat for trout and other aquatic life.

Big Spring Creek supports healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout, making Hruska a popular destination for anglers. The creek's combination of pools, riffles, and abundant aquatic vegetation provides feeding and holding water for trout. Fly fishing is particularly popular on Big Spring Creek, where anglers can find fish feeding on the stream's diverse aquatic insect life.

The Hruska area also contributes to the broader effort to protect and improve habitat along Big Spring Creek. Restoration and conservation projects along the creek have focused on returning portions of the stream to a more natural riffle-and-pool pattern, improving riparian vegetation, increasing stream habitat, and benefiting fish populations. Similar restoration work elsewhere on Big Spring Creek has produced significant improvements in trout numbers.

The creek corridor and surrounding grasslands provide habitat for a variety of wildlife. Visitors may see waterfowl, songbirds, deer, beaver, and other small mammals along the creek. Cottonwoods, willows, native grasses, and other riparian vegetation provide cover and nesting habitat while helping maintain the cool, shaded conditions favored by trout.

Hruska Fishing Access offers a quieter setting for enjoying Big Spring Creek away from the immediate Lewistown area. Visitors can fish for trout, watch wildlife, and enjoy the scenic character of a spring-fed Montana stream. A toilet is available at the site, although access is currently rated as difficult for visitors with mobility limitations.
